So it was a must for me and my wife to visit the Pfannenstielhof in Bolzano to taste the red wines praised by customers and experts. No sooner said than done - after a night of continuous rain in South Tyrol, the time had finally come. We arranged a tasting appointment with Margareth - the boss of the house - in the morning at short notice.
When we arrived at the winery after a short search and sat down on the terrace with a view of the vineyard below the St. Magdalena church, we immediately noticed one thing: Wind. There was a pleasant breeze around the winery and through the vineyard. When asked about this, Margareth told us that this was the air current coming from the Garda Pass, which you don't feel in Bolzano itself, because it moves along the slopes of the Bolzano basin. And it is precisely these winds that create a unique microclimate around the Pfannenstielhof. This is because the grapes dry very quickly after the rain, which is very good for the health of the grapes. Mould therefore hardly has a chance and sprays are only needed very discreetly. In addition, the lower part of the vineyard stands on the alluvial soil of the Rivelaunbach. And that is exactly the perfect soil for Lagrein.
All these details and Margareth and Johannes Pfeifer's feeling for the vineyard and the wine contribute to the unique maturation of the wines and the tasting of the small but extremely fine range of wines was a great taste experience and a complete success.
